METAL MONDAY: NOTHING ELSE MATTERS

When you think of classic rock bands singing emotional love songs, heavy metal group Metallica probably wouldn't be the first one that comes to mind. Most of their numbers are very heavy and very metal. They don't exactly scream romantic, sentimental odes to love.

But there is one song, a departure for the hard-rocking veterans of heavy metal. It's called "Nothing Else Matters." To begin, that's a pretty classic title for a love song. What it refers to might be up for debate, but the concept is very clear. Looking at some of the lyrics gives us more insight:

So close, no matter how far

Couldn't be much more from the heart

Forever trust in who we are

And nothing else matters

Never opened myself this way

Life is ours, we live it our way

All these words, I don't just say

And nothing else matters

Pretty deep stuff. The beautiful, simple melody only adds to the impact. I was never a Metallica fan when they first got big, still not a metalhead. But this song and "Enter Sandman" have become favorites of mine.

If it seems out of place for this group to do what could be described as a touching love song, perhaps that speaks to our pre-conceived notions of what this or that rock group is supposed to play. Or maybe it speaks to the talent of Metallica that they can pull this off. Either way, it's a great song.

The video below is their official video. Enjoy.
