MONDAY IS FOR: DIALOGUE
I’ve been working hard on the 3rd draft of Return to Rainbow Ridge, incorporating improvements to the story plot so I can have it ready for my editor by the first week in November. So–today I thought I’d share a scene I wrote a while ago, not even for a specific story. It’s between two young people at the end of their first date, with the young man a bit shy about saying how he feels (been there, done that).
He said, “Thanks again. I really enjoyed tonight."
"No, I should thank you. I've never had as good a time with anyone."
"Well—goodnight then."
She had the feeling he didn't want to leave, but was unable to say the words. Something was up.
"Okay, hold on. Did I do something wrong? Am I missing something here?"
"No, not at all. Why would you ask?"
"Noah, you aren't like any of the other guys I've been with. But they at least knew what they wanted. They had no clue about the right way to go about it, or even thought about what I wanted. But at least they went for it. What's your problem?"
"Um, I'm not sure what you mean."
"I think you know. I've felt it all evening. Don't be afraid, not of me. I won't say no."
"Maybe I'm not as different as you think. Maybe I'm afraid you won't really like me the way I'm dying for you to do. But the same goes for you. If you want something from me, don't assume I'm going to magically read your mind. I haven't developed that super-power yet."
"Okay, I guess that's fair. I think you know what I want, but I'll say it out loud, so there's no confusion. I want you to kiss me, Noah. Right now."
He was through with words. He pulled her to him, kissed her like it was going to last for three days.
When they finally came up for air, she said, "Wow, you certainly do have a super-power." She giggled at his embarrassment.
He replied, "It's a new one that just surfaced tonight."
She giggled again. Then the realization of what he meant set in, along with a look of disbelief. "Are you saying that was your first?"
"My first real, live kiss. Yes, ma'am."
"Oh my God! You really are special, aren't you?"
"Whatever I am is what you bring out in me. It's your doing."
"So that means you can't do it with anyone else."
"I wouldn't say that."
"Um, oh, I thought—"
"It means I don't want to do it with anyone else. You're special too. Very special."
He kissed her again, this time taking much longer. He was getting the hang of it.
"Whew! You learn fast. You know what?"
"What?"
She hugged him tightly, her head snuggled against his chest. "I'm glad it's you."
"Me too. I don't want to leave now."
"I don't want you to go. But I'm afraid Mom will have other ideas."
"That's cool. She's just looking out for you."
"Really? You don't mind that?"
"Why should I? Besides, you can tell her now you have someone else to look out for you."
"Wow. I guess I was wrong."
"About what?"
"You do know what you want, don't you?"
"I have for some time. Goodnight again. I'll call you tomorrow—promise."
"Okay. Goodnight, Noah."
She reached up, pulled his face down to hers, and kissed him one last time. But it wouldn't be the last time, not by a million.
