MONDAY MUSINGS: DOING THE RIGHT THING

Sometimes doing the right thing is different from what you want to do. Or maybe it just means having to pick one priority over another. I haven’t done a thing on my first book, Return to Rainbow Ridge, in over a week. I wish it was otherwise, but then, that’s where the priorities come in.

It’s that time of year, when tax information is due to employees and contributors. As treasurer for my church, it’s my job to do the IRS W-2 and 1099 forms as well as contribution statements for our members and other givers for 2019. They’re due by the end of January, so I’ve had my hands full getting that all done. I still have a couple more days of work to go.

I have been writing—just not on Return to Rainbow Ridge. I’m entering my second book, Rule Number One, in a writing contest, for which the entry is due by February 1. I have it more or less done, but am waiting almost to the last minute to see if there are any more inspirations to add to it. And I’m still part of a critique group, who are reviewing the same book, which I have to work on to get enough for the critique session next week.

To be honest, any deadlines or schedules for the first book, Return to Rainbow Ridge, are self-imposed. I’m the one who wants it released and available, the sooner the better. But unfortunately, those other things have external schedules which have to be met. That’s why I’m not working on the book I want to be released first.

Life is about choices and compromises. John Lennon was right: “Life is what happens to you while your busy making other plans.”
