SUNDAY INSPIRATION: PAPERBACK WRITER

You don't often see music videos about something you actually do, that you can relate to. There is one that stands out, presenting the popular 1960’s view of a fiction author, or paperback writers, as the song refers to us.

Instead of being about love and romance, it’s about writing. The song is “Paperback Writer,” released by the Beatles in May 1966. It has a great opening riff and was one of many number one records by the Beatles on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

The lyrics are more than a bit sarcastic. It’s clear they are about the cheap “dime novel” sort of paperback books that were so popular several decades ago, when this song first came out. Paperback books of today, or their electronic equivalents, have a very different status and image for readers and book buyers.

As I said, the lyrics are a bit sarcastic.See for yourself:

It's a thousand pages, give or take a few

I'll be writing more in a week or two

I could make it longer if you like the style

I can change it 'round

And I want to be a paperback writer

If you really like it you can have the rights

It could make a million for you overnight

If you must return it you can send it here

But I need a break

And I want to be a paperback writer

If you really like it you can have the rights

It could make a million for you overnight

If you must return it you can send it here

But I need a break

And I want to be a paperback writer

Enjoy hearing about us writers.
